TomoTherapy®

TomoTherapy® delivers a very sophisticated form of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) using an integrated treatment system that is unlike any other -- giving patients unparalleled accuracy, precision, and safety. The Cancer Center is one of only two facilities in New Jersey where patients can receive TomoTherapy and one of a few centers in the United States to dedicate TomoTherapy technology to the treatment of prostate cancer.

TomoTherapy is often combined with other types of radiation therapy, including seed implantation and high-dose-rate brachytherapy for prostate cancer. TomoTherapy integrates treatment planning, patient positioning, and treatment delivery into one unique system.

With TomoTherapy, the radiation oncologist obtains a CT scan to localize the patient's tumor before each treatment, then deliver painless and precise radiation therapy based on a carefully customized plan. This double-checking procedure is particularly useful for the prostate and other organs that can move from day to day. In fact, TomoTherapy is the most effective method of radiation therapy that a radiation oncologist can use to be certain prostate cancer is being properly targeted for treatment.

TomoTherapy is just one of the state-of-the-art radiation therapy methods used at The Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. The Department of Radiation Oncology is the region's most comprehensive and provides every advanced treatment modality available in the field today, while investing constantly in equipment, technologies, and staff.
